Staying Cool in Heated Times

Centered is the place to be. That’s one of the benefits of Yoga. Learning the art of balance. When we notice our tendencies to swing too far to one side or the other with things such as over-eating or under-exercising, we yearn to get into balance. It’s a natural desire to feel good in our bodies, hearts, and minds. So how to stay cool in heated times?

We may sound like a broken record, but breathe. Learn to stay in touch with your breath. At least, learn to check in when you’re feeling stress. A few conscious breaths can reset everything. You can train yourself to be attentive to your breathing. Remembering to stop and pay attention can offer the opportunity to recalibrate your stress response and to slow down your overamped mind.

Keeping up a personal practice can also help you stay cool. Time on your mat can reset your world. Time shifts. You slow down and become present with the reality that is right in front of you. Let your practice be a prayer. Letting your breath flow in unison with your body in combined asana and pranayama is an awesome expression. Being in tune is a tune-up that gives you a centered space to perceive life from with the opportunity for greater clarity.

Spend time in nature. Nature heals. Nature soothes. Nature rebalances our senses and our sense of ourselves. There is no substitute for nature.

Hot times call for a cool and centered head and heart. Staying cool is a tool you can sharpen and use to your best advantage.
